The Avataq Cultural Institute was created in 1980 with a mandate to protect and promote Inuit language and culture in Nunavik.

Since its inception, the Institute has recognised the valuable role of Elders in Inuit society. As a result, it pushed for the creation of the Inuit Elders Conference, the first of which was held in Kangirsuk in 1981.
